![]() But Season 1 of “The Witcher” is still hanging in there, comfortably in fifth place. Then Covid-19 set in, and two years passed without more “Witcher.” A few shows, notably “Squid Game,” overtook it in the all-time Netflix rankings. In late 2019, it was by some measures the most popular television show in the world, and it was Netflix’s second most-viewed TV debut to that point. Let's just hope Season Two embraces a simpler structure and has more theme songs. Before “Squid Game,” before “Bridgerton,” there was “The Witcher.” That was one of the reasons we structured the story that way.” We need to let the characters live and breathe in this world a little bit. And I want to make sure that what I call the ‘bells and whistles of fantasy’ - the monsters and the magic and the violence and battles and sexuality - all of those things we expect from high fantasy, that those don’t take up the room of actual character development. “And one of our early decisions we made was actually just to introduce Geralt and Ciri in Episode 1 and to hold Yennefer for Episode 2 for that exact reason. “What was important to me is starting off and making sure that we understood who Geralt was and who Ciri was, and then, in Episode 2, who Yennefer was,” Hissirch told TheWrap. ![]() But, she structured the story this way so we could have all three main characters-Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer-on screen the whole season. Now, all of this gets confusing because showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich actually wanted audiences to believe this was all happening simultaneously until we see the young version of Queen Calanthe midway through the season. It's important to keep in mind that each character's timeline is progressing linearly but they are just happening simultaneously. ![]() It's in these scenes that we see a younger version of Queen Calanthe, who died in the first episode. And it's during this time that he becomes bound to Ciri through the Law of Surprise. He meets Yennefer in the past before the fall of Cintra. This is when the bulk of Geralt's storyline takes place. Between Yennefer's training and the fall of Cintra We don't know how long she acted as a lone wolf mage, but we at least know her training took place a minimum of 30 years prior to the present day storyline. But at one point, once she finishes her training, she says she spent three decades serving kings before going solo. It's difficult to figure out exactly when because-like Geralt-she doesn't actually age like a normal human. She trains to be a mage long before the present day events of the show. The earliest events that take place in The Witcher show the origin story of Yennefer. More than 30 years before the fall of Cintra In fact, showrunners have promised that Season Two will be more linear. Yennefer's battle with the Nilfgaardians and Geralt finally meeting with Ciri is the present and presumably the single timeline where Season Two will pick up. Throughout the series we learn that Geralt was in the castle when Cintra fell and at the end of the series all of the stories converge into this present timeline. The easiest way to keep track of the show is to remember that young Ciri's storyline after the invasion of Cintra by Nilfgaard is the present time. So here's a simple way to understand when and what the hell is going on in The Witcher across the three timelines: Present storyline I appreciate the ambition, but damn, it does ask the viewer to work harder than necessary when I just want to see Cavill slice through some shit with a sword. One minute you're watching Geralt kill some sort of Banshee and the next you're sorting through decades of alliances, high fantasy race wars, and mage political factions. Here's What You Need to Understand The Witcherīut what's keeping it from being a frivolous, all-in-good-fun show is an insanely convoluted plot that takes place over about 40 years and involves some characters who age and others who don't age at all-making it impossible for any casual viewer to surmise what the fuck is going on.Everything We Know About 'The Witcher' Season 2.
